Work with and implementation of new concepts for management of product development - experiences for the Swedish manufacturing industry

Article Abstract:

Factors such as project leadership and project communication are vital to the success of product development. A survey of 20 Swedish firms shows that underestimation or misjudgement of such factors often leads to a less satisfactory project result. The occurrence of initial confusion and lack of concentration, as in the case of surveyed Swedish firms, can be attributed to carrying out of unclear project directives. The existence of communication barriers in terms of attitudes and frequency of communication were also noted among surveyed Swedish firms.

R&D and technology purchase through licence agreements: complementary strategies and complementary assets

Article Abstract:

The role of inward technology licensing and in-house research and development as alternative and complementary strategies in new product and process development was examined in a sample of 128 UK manufacturing companies. Data were collected on complementary assets, technology strategies, internal organization and market structure. Results showed that strategies of inward technology licensing and in-house research are complements rather than alternatives and that extensive use of licensing requires substantial complementary assets to be in place.
