The role of reputation in the recruitment of scientists

Article Abstract:

A survey of PhD students was conducted to determine the importance of a company's reputation for openness with scientific information in the recruitment of scientists. Results showed that scientific publication provides a broad degree of visibility. However, some companies had broader visibility due to factors not directly related to their research efforts and publication patterns. These suggested the significance of publication in a company's recruiting efforts.

Firm management of scientific information: some predictors and implications of openness versus secrecy

Article Abstract:

A model aiming to explain differences in R&D performance among research-intensive companies is introduced. It expounds on the theory of science as a public good, supporting this with a game-theoretic argument for individual firm choices of openness or secrecy regarding scientific information. Firms with a policy of openness are more productive than those opting for secrecy.
