World swing to using management consultants on business, industry

Article Abstract:

The complexity and uncertainty of work are driving the increase in management consultants. The consulting market was 0.5% of world gross domestic product in 1988, is 1.5% of world gross domestic product in 1998 and will be 2% of world gross domestic product in 2003. Project management has become important in corporations because individuals do not only need technical skills but also need to understand the process of the job.

Issues concerning the practice of mentoring of staff in corporations are discussed. The usefulness and value of mentoring to individual employees is questioned and its place as a gimmick in management is discussed.
