Small business growth through geographic expansion: a comparative case study

Article Abstract:

Small business firms attempt to attain growth often through geographic expansion. This strategy, which is effected by extending a company's business operations to one or more geographic sites, pose managerial challenges and usually requires more effort than expected. Areas for growth planning, expansion site characteristics, and reasons for growth are variables that need to be considered along with geographical expansion. A firm should also take into account growth management, expansion performance, and moderator variables.

A qualitative study of managerial challenges facing small business geographic expansion

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the managerial challenges faced by the Local Advertising Co. (LAC) during its geographic expansion provides important insights on the common growth strategy employed by small business enterprises. Results indicate that planning for growth must always be complemented by learning and flexibility. Growth management also entails special skills and calls for delegation of authority. Findings further suggest that firm growth may be motivated by either economic or emotional reasons.
