Software firms expected to post mixed earnings

Article Abstract:

Several companies in the software industry are expected to post mixed results for the quarter ended Jun 30, 1992. Microsoft Corp credits sales of its Windows graphical user interface (GUI) for its expected profit of $203 million, 68 cents a share, on earnings of $800 million, up 52 percent. Microsoft's increased spreadsheet market share has hurt Lotus Development Corp, which had low sales and lower than expected earnings. Lotus is expected to realize a profit of $13.2 million, 30 cents a share, on revenue of $222 million, a gain of 19 percent. Borland International Inc has delayed release of new products and will likely post a profit of $2.5 million, 10 cents a share, on revenue of $115 million, down 16 percent. Novell Inc's steady sales result in an expected profit of $62.8 million, 40 cents a share, on revenue of $240 million, up 43 percent. Symantec Corp will likely post profits of $6.9 million, and Electronic Arts Inc a profit of $2.1 million.

Software firms are expected to report mixed results for the March quarter

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Corp and many mid-sized software publishers continue to post increased earnings for the quarter ending March 31, 1991. Analysts say companies offering updated versions of established products are doing particularly well. Microsoft is expected to become the first software firm to reach $500 million in earnings for a quarter, an increase of 60 percent from $310.9 million in the same quarter of 1990. Net income will increase 57 percent to $118 million or 95 cents per share. Lotus Development meanwhile, is expected to post a sharp earnings decline, but still a profit. Analysts expect the company to announce net income to have fallen to $6.5 million from $22.8 million. Lotus' revenue is expected to have risen slightly, up to $170 million from $165.5 million for the same period in 1990.
