Strategy and the board of directors in venture capital-backed firms

Article Abstract:

Boards of directors are more engaged in the plotting of company strategies and evaluating them when they have large financial investments or ownership stakes in venture capital-backed firms. The same level of involvement is manifested even if board size, insider board representation, and diversification level are not changed. This demeanor is explained by the institutional theory which contends that organizational routines, the role of the board included, can be traced to historical patterns of behavior which the industry eventually embraced as appropriate.
