Lucent bets on fiber optics, but faces hurdles

Article Abstract:

Lucent Technologies Inc. is committed to becoming the dominant player in the fiber-optics market. To do so, it must compete effectively with more nimble start-ups and established equipment leaders. Lucent is a major player in optical networking and has contributed its own optical technologies including dense wave division multiplexing, or DWDM. Lucent is in hot competition with Nortel Networks, but plans to roll out a more sophisticated product than Nortel's OC 192, which has been on the market for several years.
