New software drives Greyhound's modernization plan: computer program makes it easier to purchase tickets in advance

Article Abstract:

Greyhound Lines Inc's new $4 million Trips software program, scheduled to go online at the firm's 200 biggest markets by mid-1993, will allow patrons to buy their tickets in advance via a toll-free telephone number. The new reservation system is seen as a key to Greyhound's efforts to modernize its system and boost ridership, which fell 7.4 percent in the first 11 months of 1992. The new program will also give management instant access to ridership numbers, thus allowing the firm to assign buses and personnel more efficiently and fill unused seats by offering special discounts. Greyhound also aspires to offer weekend travel packages that include hotel reservations and a frequent-traveler promotion.
