Teaching the teachers TQM

Article Abstract:

The University Challenge (UC) is a program created by a group of companies that had successfully introduced total quality management (TQM) principles in their operations. The aim of this is to help universities develop the ability of their students to cope and excel in TQM envrironments. The UC program hopes to achieve this goal by encouraging universities to incorporate the principles of TQM into their courses and operations. The role of participating companies is to help universities conduct their customer survey, self-assessment and curriculum integration strategies. One of the companies that participated in the UC program is Milliken and Co., which was paired with North Carolina State University and Georgia Institute of Technology. The company is the first to conduct sessions so their experience could serve as a guideline for the four other participating companies. Results of Milliken's activity are presented.

Teaching quality: lessons from Alcoa

Article Abstract:

Alcoa began a quality improvement program in its finance department in 1988. Fifteen top finance managers underwent a nine-day training program on quality, which included such topics as international competitiveness, teamwork, and problem solving. Sixty employees reporting to the top managers then attended the training program, which had been improved as a result of feedback from the first group. The changes that Alcoa would have liked to make to its first training session included placing less emphasis on theory and more emphasis on the basic methodologies of quality.
