Technology strategy in a software products company

Article Abstract:

Market opportunities are often missed when firms emphasize only core competencies and technologies. On the other hand, firms that neglect core competencies and technologies run the risk of overextending its product lines. To avoid the possibility of lower profits because of overextended products that fail to meet customers' needs, firms should have a firm grasp of the tools needed to effectively manage technological innovations. The relationship between the nurturing of core technologies and the evolution of a product family in a software company is investigated.

Complementarity, compatibility, and product change: breaking with the past?

Article Abstract:

Companies that are considering product changes should carefully determine how the new product will affect consumer acceptance of other related or complementary products. They should play particular attention to how the product change will influence consumers' costs, in terms of new equipment and time needed to familiarize with the new product. An analysis of the effectiveness of product changes executed by Coca-Cola Co., IBM and Sony Corp. is presented.

Alliances, external technology acquisition, and discontinuous technological change

Article Abstract:

Joint ventures, technology licensing agreements, and various forms of research and development are some of the forms of alliances that companies are adopting to obtain critical technology. Alliances are better preferred by companies than mergers/acquisitions because of their cost effectiveness. Changes on the levels of urgency and uncertainty of a company are some of the conditions which may warrant alliance for technology acquisition.
