Results were mixed for the telecommunications equipment industry in 1996, but these stocks are expected to outperform other industries in 1997. The market for telecommunications equipment has changed, and new transmission modes have created changes in demand. However, there are risks for the industry with changes in pricing, competition, technology, and regulation. These stocks must be individually evaluated prior to purchase by investors.

There was a strong rally for telecommunications equipment stocks in late 1998, but this was mainly a negation of the selloff these stocks had earlier in the year. Several companies in this industry had good profits for the year, but earnings for many others fell or decelerated in 1998 for a variety of reasons. There are a number of individual stocks in the telecommunications equipment sector which are timely for investors in 1999.
