Telstra's treasure trove of value

Article Abstract:

The soon-to-be-privatized Australian telephone company Telstra is in good financial shape: it forecasts a net profit of A$2.8 billion for 1997/98. As Telstra shares will be offered in the US, the healthy net profit is harbinger of Telstra's ultimate success as a publicly traded company. Telstra stock is sure to rise above the initial public offering price of $4 per share. An overview of the Australian telecommunications company is presented.

Don't tax trusts as companies

Article Abstract:

The Australian business community is set to come into conflict with the government over its tax policies. Tax Commissioner Michael Cormody is wedded to the old fashioned idea of soaking the rich with taxes to raise revenue, including changing the status of trust companies to raise A$1 billion in revenue. Deregulation of the telecommunications industry may adversely impact Telstra.

Article Abstract:

Australia may expect relaxation of capital gains taxation, which would influence more talented accounting graduates to work for company growth rather than settle for salary alone.
