The Influence of the Physical Environment in Offices

Article Abstract:

The psychological effect of physical environment on office personnel has been generally ignored in the planning of layout and furnishings. The environment can have either positive or negative effects on employee behavior, attitudes and work. Some types of jobs require different physical structures than others for best performance. The effects of various kinds of stimuli are examined. Symbolic artifacts such as colors and decorations create an atmosphere that will have a desirable or undesirable effect. Diagrams illustrate and clarify the text.

Turnover and Job Performance

Article Abstract:

A turnover model is developed. This conceptual model is designed to integrate job performance with traditional turnover models. Previous research on the topic is reviewed. Several hypotheses are tested. It is hypothesized that performance affects ease and desirability of movement as well as forms or involuntary turnover behavior. Predictions are made based on the model. Job performance and attitude may interact in turnover prediction. Job satisfaction is more related to turnover at certain performance levels.

The Congruence Perspective of Organization Design

Article Abstract:

A theoretical model of organization design is proposed. It is grounded in current literature. The model is applicable for both small businesses and divisions of large organizations. Environment-structure and technology-structure are integrated into the model. It is assumed that organization design is the result of strategic choices made by key personnel. Alternative conceptualizations of organization design are reviewed. Thirteen hypotheses are proposed. The model will be improved through empirical testing.
