The Lasting Qualities of PERT: Preferences and Perceptions of R&D Project Managers

Article Abstract:

Program evaluation and reveiw technique (PERT) is a management tool which has been the subject of criticism when used in research and development (R&D) projects. A questionnaire was designed to survey R&D managers on the use and popularity of PERT. Results indicate that even critics suport certain applications of PERT. The popularity and application of PERT in R&D is shown in graphs. The results of the study show that PERT is an effective R&D management tool. A sample of the survey is included.

Monitoring R&D project costs against pre-specified targets

Article Abstract:

Checking research and development expenses against pre-specified targets can be made easier by using spreadsheets. A computer system's graphical presentation of the actual costs compared to expected targets is more reliable. Another advantage of the use of spreadsheets is that menu-driven systems can be operated without prior knowledge of the spreadsheet's command structure. The graphs also apply in accountancy, statistical process control and forecasting.

From low- to high-tech project management

Article Abstract:

The art of project management is analyzed on the basis of a four-type project model that includes low-tech, medium-tech, high-tech and super high-tech. The model illustrates different applications of the common characteristics of managerial attitude, style and philosophy within each conceptual project type. The model incorporates an innovative framework that enables the inclusion of some types of projects that do not fit into more traditional frameworks.
