The Mac is back, with an Apple laptop to suit various needs

Article Abstract:

Apple's PowerBook G3 is a group laptop computers with PowerPC G3 processor chips with customization capability into over 1,000 configurations of processor speeds, disk drives, memory, screens and modems to suit user needs. The cost is in the $2,299 to $6,519 range. The $3,899 model tested came with a 250MHz chip, 32MB memory, 4GB hard drive, floppy-disk drive, CD-ROM drive and 56-Kbps modem. The cheapest models have 233MHz processors and 12.1-in screens, while the costliest versions come with 292MHz processors and 14.1-in screens. Apple's PowerBooks weigh over seven pounds and should be considered as replacements for desktops when desk space is limited or for carrying between home and office or for limited travel. The PowerBook comes with a comfortable keyboard and has two bays embedded on the sides into which the user can swap batteries and disk drives in and out.

New, light 'Jupiters' are $999 laptops designed for travelers

Article Abstract:

HP, Sharp and Vadem are working with Microsoft to develop a new variety of Laptop computer code-named 'Jupiter,' and prototypes of HP's Jornada , Sharp's Mobilon TriPad and Vadem's Clio are nearly finalized. Examples could be commercially available in Nov 1998. Unlike previous laptops, which essentially were miniaturized versions of desktop PCs, Jupiter machines are specifically designed for travel. Jupiters are small and light, with good keyboards and screens, and all three of these initial models will be priced at only $999. Of the three, HP's Jornada stands out. It has a well-designed keyboard that includes 11 special icon keys for invoking built-in programs. Jornada's battery-life expectation is 10 hours, and an optional extra-strength battery can increase this to 15 hours.
