The ballet shoe gets a makeover, but few yet see the pointe

Article Abstract:

Gaynor Minden Inc. has devoted itself to making an orthopedically sound pointe shoe for ballet dancers. The traditional pointe shoe, which is made of satin and cardboard, has changed little since it was introduced in early 1800s. Gaynor Minden re-engineered the shoe to give it high-impact supports and toe cushions. Although these high-tech shoes lessen the abuse taken by dancers, many ballet dancers still prefer the traditional shoes and the pain they cause. Former New York City Ballet principal dancer Suki Schorer stated that Ballet is an art form, one not concerned with health. Other dancers find the Gaynor Minden shoe less flexible than its traditional counterpart. Because professional dancers have not embraced the high-tech shoe, Gaynor Minden has targeted its shoes at ballet schools and amateur dancers. Amateur and professional ballet dancers spend about $150 million on shoes each year.

Lodging industry starts to scale back on rapid growth

Article Abstract:

The lodging industry is terminating scheduled hotel-construction projects worth approximately $2 billion. These projects were projected to run through 2000. Analysts assert that up to 20% of the projects could be terminated. Several major hotel companies such as Sunburst Hospitality Corp. and Extended Stay America Inc. are retrenching from high growth forecasts. Analysts believe that these firms will implement additional cutbacks in the future. The industry has been hurt by a hotel room glut and a drop in occupancy rates.
