The changing role of forecasting in a competitive environment

Article Abstract:

Central Electric Power Cooperative Inc realized the need for effective forecasting after experiencing increased competition for consumers and energy sources from other utilities. In response to these changes, the company adopted forecasting measures for planning and analysis requirements. Moreover, it initiated reformsto consolidate the function under common economic, demographic and planning assumptions to achieve balanced forecasts that served the interests of both thecompany and the consumers.

Non-technical forecasting issues generic and health insurance

Article Abstract:

Business forecasting entails the gathering, analysis and interpretation of pertinent data and consultations with management and other personnel regarding projections to be made. The efficient conduct of these steps in forecasting will result in a reliable business forecast. Forecasting in the health care industry offers more challenges to forecasters. Factors, such as changes in medical costs and subscribers' claims, alert forecasters to make contingent alterations to their projections.

Benchmarking provides a valuable tool for maintaining competitiveness by identifying performance levels necessary to define goals and by enhancing businesses' forecasting capability. Forecasting remains a necessary starting point for formulating strategies in spite of revolutionary changes in computer technology. In combination with benchmarking,foreseen as the successor to 'just-in-time' inventory systems, forecasting willhelp companies reduce costs and improve services.
