Article Abstract:

The article examines the new organizational structure of the United Kingdom's National Health Service using five analytical scripts: critiquing, challenging, defending, cautioning and mediating. The article also identifies three interpretive schemes: executive pragmatism, medical professionalism, and ideological-new public management. It is posited that the new structure involves a high level of contestation.
