The environmental crisis in the office: why aren't managers managing the office environment?

Article Abstract:

Managing the office environment should be top priority for business leaders considering that more than half of the labor force in the Western world are office workers. Providing well-designed and well-maintained workplaces is not only an ethical responsibility of employers, it is also a good business decision. A well-managed office ecology helps to improve worker productivity, reduce absenteeism and lessen turnover. On the other hand, a poorly designed and/or maintained office environment can adversely affect the morale, and even the health, of employees. A framework for managing the office environment is presented. This framework, called PLANS, covers the most important aspects of the work place, namely, privacy, office lighting, noise levels, air quality and space.

Understanding power: bringing about strategic change

Article Abstract:

Management studies show that businesses do not have much knowledge about the implementation of management strategy, even though it often determines their success. Strategy implementation models known as the grand plan, the great man and the quick fix are available for study. Power is an additional approach which is rarely discussed because it can often be abused. Power can be used in subtle ways to enhance strategy implementation without mis-management.

Discourse and institutions

Article Abstract:

A discursive model of institutionalization that highlights the relationship between discourse and social action through the production and consumption of texts is developed. It is argued that discourse analysis provides a coherent framework for the investigation of institutionalization.
