The institutionalization and evolutionary dynamics of interorganizational alliances and networks

Article Abstract:

This article pictures a fascinating and sometimes confusing world in which different schools of though, several methodological approaches, and distinct foci in terms of industrial background, modes of cooperation, and international patterns lay out the complexity against which one has to understand interorganizational networks and alliances. Given the multifaceted character of this topic, we encourage researchers to incorporate major elements of a multidimensional orientation in their future research. Forms of interorganizational governance for multinational alliances

Article Abstract:

This drew upon complementary work in transaction cost economics, organization theory, and international corporate strategy studies to examine governance forms for multinational alliances. An analysis of 153 new alliances suggested that the selection of a contractual agreement or a joint venture as a form of governance was influenced by the intent to conduct R&D and the technological intensity of the alliance's product area alone and in interactive combination with the size of the parent firms. Understanding the cross-level embeddedness of interfirm partnership formation

Article Abstract:

A cross-level understanding of the embeddedness of interfirm partnering in the context of the formation of new partnerships is suggested. Results reveal that it makes a critical distinction among environmental embeddedness, interorganizational embeddedness, and dyadic embeddedness, expressing the importance of understanding the interaction of these different levels of embeddedness.
