The modernist from Maine

Article Abstract:

Poet Edwin Arlington Robinson was quite popular until his death in 1935, in part because of the brevity of many of his poems. Robinson was able to tell a long story in verse and have it make sense. He won a Pulitzer Prize for his works, and is often regarded as one of America's greatest unrecognized poets.

A poet and teacher of poetry believes American poetry has become banal as poets have not included their personal touch in their later works. The social expectations of poets and their actions have not helped the state of poetry. Different language use has contributed to poetry's lack of appeal.

The writer in prison

Article Abstract:

Prison is an enduring metaphor for the literary creative process. Prose is the most frequently produced prisoners' writing, and poets seem to do best in solitary confinement. The notion that prison ennobles writers and writing is mostly sentimentality, mixed with the mystique of the unknown.
