Australia should learn from what is happening in the banking industry in such American states as California and Texas. In Texas, the banking industry is controlled by firms on the east coast. In California, many mergers have been formed, including the BankAmerica of San Francisco and NationsBank of North Carolina. This merger will result in the nation's largest bank.

ANZ Banking Group is not meeting performance targets for its new Gateway investment product in Apr 1998. Gateway was introduced in Feb 1998 and is an example of the alliance initiated between ANZ and US funds manager and consultant Frank Russell during late 1997. Money in the Gateway investment product is invested in Frank Russell multi-manager funds.
