The GST has produced an additional $2.6 billion revenue as the tax office improves its systems to identify undeclared income. Treasurer Peter Costello however rules out any review of negative gearing or the halving of capital gains tax, which some economists argue, has contributed to the housing bubble and results in the tax system favoring those with access to capital over ordinary salary and wage earners.

There are as many as five Australian manufacturers looking at overseas prospects, while others may just go with the import tide as the Australian dollar hurtles towards US80cents, and Australia's manufacturers are struggling, not just exporters. Economists are of the view that the Australian dollar will reach US80 cents before settling to about US 75 cents as the US economy continues to strengthen.
