The pragmatics of 'really mattering' on policy issues: William Ouchi as exemplar
Article Abstract:
Policy and plans are loosely coupled to outcomes, and some specifics of William Ouchi's experiences with schooling are analyzed to discuss whether work matters of management researchers are only partly under their control. The policy-relevant assertions in Ouchi's example started with successful outcomes, which were converted by him into a potent force for policy change through a series of inductions and deductions and provisions of autonomy to public schools.

The strategic use of decentralized institutions: Exploring certification with the ISO 14001 management standard
Article Abstract:
The function of decentralized institutions is clarified by analyzing the strategic motives of individual partners. An important type of decentralized institution, certificate management standards is investigated using the pattern of certification with the ISO 14001 management standard, and it is conclude that firms use these institutions to reduce problems that might arise with exchange partners that lack information or fear opportunism.
