The purpose and process of science: contrasting understandings in UK research establishments

Article Abstract:

Qualitative interviews of scientists/ managers in seven government-funded research establishments in UK reveal a diversity in scientists' notions of scientific purpose. The diversity exists not only with regards to the nature of their work, but also in terms of the progression of their careers and changes in their work. A diversity was also noted in scientists' understanding of the relationship between applied science and discovery.
