Trane's SOUP accounting

Article Abstract:

American Standard Inc's commercial vehicle brake manufacturing division Trane Co has created a cost accounting system that integrates new ideas into traditional accounting practices. The new accounting system is known as SOUP (system of utter practicality) accounting and was formulated alongside new production processes at Trane Co. Hence, SOUP accounting makes use of a standard costing system based on demand flow manufacturing (DFM) concepts. The necessity to monitor variations in cost facilitated the retention of the standard cost system. Information for financial statements was derived from annual cost pool reviews. Main guidelines considered for designing the accounting system were simplicity and low cost. Operating rules, cost pools and performance measures were developed base on these guidelines. The new system was tested using specific efficiency and control requirements.

Enliven your teaching

Article Abstract:

Accounting programs should be geared towards teaching students to learn on their own, according to the Accounting Education Change Commission. Teachers can help bring this about by constantly motivating their students. Effective teaching involves establishing the learning environment, encouraging ego-involvement through interactions in the classroom, lecturing, asking thought-provoking questions, answering questions thoughtfully, and getting feedback.
