Understanding the participation of critical task specialists in strategic decision making

Article Abstract:

Organizations typically rely on critical task specialists to decide on management strategies. The extent of specialist participation was studied in hospitals in which physicians assumed the role of such specialists. The study found that participation was related to the type of decision that was made, including strategic decisions, marketing decisions, operations changes. Thus, different specialists are called upon to provide information that would be significant to the decision being made.

Effects of Conflicting Analyses on Managerial Decision Making

Article Abstract:

A study to examine the effectiveness of single versus conflicting analysis on managerial decision making is presented. Two propositions are tested. The first is that single decision analysis may result in biased decision making. The second is that alternative analysis based on different assumptions improves decision quality. A laboratory experiment is utilized. Study results support both propositions. A dialogue approach to the use of analytic aids is recommended.
