United Video makes offer for Gemstar

United Video Satellite Group (Tulsa, OK), an on-screen television listings company, has made an offer to acquire Gemstar International Group Ltd. (Pasadena, CA) for $2.8 billion in a plan to offer interactive program guides for cable television. Tele-Communications Inc., the second largest cable operator in the US, controls United Video through 2 of its companies. Gemstar, which is known for its VCR Plus system, first received the offer from United Video on March 13, driving up its stock 35% since the offer.

Netscape and Qwest plan to announce Web alliance

Article Abstract:

Netscape Communications Corporation and Qwest Communications International Inc. plan to announce a strategic alliance. The venture will be known as Netscape Contact. The intent of the venture is to allow consumers to manage E-mail, voice mail and fax communications through a single site on the Web. The deal will link Netscape's browser software with Qwest's fiber optics communications networks. The venture is expected to generate $150 million to $175 million in revenue in the first 18 months.
