Using cognitive mapping in management research: decisions about technical innovation

Article Abstract:

Cognitions play a key role in managers' decisions about technological innovation. However, research into technological innovation has failed to give much attention to cognitive processes. It is possible that cognitive mapping methodologies could therefore make a valuable contribution to research into technological innovation. In particular, cognitive mapping methodologies could play a role in identifying the subjective beliefs of those making decisions about technological innovation. In this way, these beliefs will be available for analysis.

Path(ological) dependency? Core competencies from an organizational perspective

Article Abstract:

Organization theory shares many of the concerns of the core competency approach, which is an increasingly popular management strategy. Application of an organizational perspective to the resource-based theory of the firm, on which this strategy is based, indicates that it perceives knowledge to be the factor on which performance depends. However, the theory fails to acknowledge the social context of knowledge acquisition within the organisation.
