Wasmosy wins presidential vote

Article Abstract:

Juan Carlos Wasmosy, representative of the Colorado Party, was elected president of Paraguay on May 9, 1993, with 40% of the vote. Wasmosy will be inaugurated on Aug 15, 1993. Paraguayan soldiers prevented expatriates from voting by closing the borders at Argentina and Brazil.

President Mugabe wins uncontested vote

Article Abstract:

Mugabe, 72, won 92.7% of the vote on Mar 16-17, 1996, after the two opposition candidates withdrew from the race alleging unfair election practices. Mugabe has ruled Zimbabwe since the 1980s and this gives him another six-year term. Only 31% of registered voters participated.

SDP wins parliamentary vote

Article Abstract:

The left-wing SDP won the majority of seats in Nigeria's new parliament in Jul 4, 1992, elections. The military government led by Pres Ibrahim Babangida had promised to relinquish power in Jan 1993.
