'Watchdog' Computers and Phones

Article Abstract:

Three new companies have been started which offer communications equipment to homeowners that will link up a home computer and telephone to provide a security system for the home. The three companies are Automatic Radius Management (ARM), CyberLYNX Computer Products and Network Communications. ARM has created a telephone to warn of burglary or fire in the home. It is called the 'Guardian' and is controlled by a microprocessor which is hooked up to the company's Dallas, Texas headquarters. The charge is twenty to twenty-five dollars a month for the service. CyberLYNX markets 'Smarthome' which is a home control and security device which attaches to a home computer. The starter kit for 'Smarthome' costs 495 dollars and is available through computer stores. Network Communications' system is called 'Protector General'. In this program, a home computer responds to sensors around the house and reports to Network's office in Denver, Colorado which, in turn, dispatches help. The cost is a 1000 dollar installation charge plus a twenty-dollar-a-month charge to the utility.
