With advertising jobs scarce, creators work on spec; they often spend thousands of their own to get noticed, but payoff is a long shot

Article Abstract:

As the advertising industry reels under the recession, freelancers and unemployed ad executives are creating sample TV commercials at their own expense to showcase their abilities, in hopes of getting work. Accordingly, Web sites have sprung up that charge ad creators to display spec work alongside actual ads. Most agree that landing bona fide employment through spec work is a long shot and that there's a risk of having ones work copied, but to many, the chance of getting hired to direct commercials is worth the risk and the expense.
