$1.8m fine on Spanish owner - while another mounts court challenge.

Article Abstract:

The owner of Spanish freezer stern trawler, Garoya Segundo, which was caught for illegal fishing in the Norwegian Barents Sea EEZ, has paid $1.8 million as fine. In addition, the catch has also been confiscated. Owner of Monte Mexueiro, another Spanish trawler, which was also caught for illegal fishing, has refused to pay the fine and is taking the matter to Norwegian court.

A list of ships using Port Louis, Mauritius, for illegal, unreported and unregulated toothfish catches is presented. The prosecution of Elqui, a fishing vessel indulging in such illegal activities, by South Georgian authorities has proved to be deterrent.

An overview of the fishing industry of Canada is presented. The regulations in the industry are discussed. Recent increased enforcement of laws has lead to a reduction in the number of fishing vessels.
