The political crisis of Germany has been settled with Gerhard Schroder stepping down as Chancellor and a coalition government being formed. Angela Merkel is to be the new Chancellor working with a coalition of both the Christian Democratic Union and the Social Democrats. The economic reforms envisioned by Ms. Merkel are likely to be slowed or stalled.

Germany's election produced no clear winner, Angela Merkel claimed 35.2 percent of the vote and Gerhard Schroeder, 34.3 percent. The unclear outcome may lead to weeks of political wrangling and the stalling of economic reforms. The vote appeard to be against the proposed Flat Tax and against the plan of economic reform.
