'92: for Asia, it was for richer, for freer

Article Abstract:

1992 proved to be a year of economic prosperity and political liberalization for Asia. While most of the world faced an economic recession during 1992, Gross National Product (GNP) rates in Asia were enviable. In particular, China, Hongkong, Taiwan and Vietnam's economies did extremely well. Most Asian countries moved towards democracy, with elections being successfully carried out in Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan and South Korea. Japan, however, faced both economic problems and political scandals in 1992.

Traveller's tales

Article Abstract:

US Vice President Dan Quayle advocates free trade which is advantageous to Asians in the light of his improved popularity and his chances at the Presidency in 1996. He maintains that unilateral free trade is not feasible in the current economic environment but it is beneficial to the US and an eventuality. He also says that the North American Free Trade Agreement will be an open market and should cause no concern for Asian exporters.

KAL 007, case closed

Article Abstract:

Power politics, rather than socialist doctrines, characterize Communist governments in Asia today. Pres Boris Yeltsin was politically motivated to disclose the contents of the black-box of Korean Air Flight 007, which was shot down by the Russians on Sep 1, 1983. Yeltsin has gained political mileage by implicating Mikhail Gorbachev and the Russian Politburo in the shooting.
