A cure for snoring

Article Abstract:

The treatment of obstructive sleep apnea can now be effected through the use of ResCare Ltd's new respiratory product. The respirator is the product of Colin Sullivan's 15 years of research and laboratory work. With the help of Peter Farrell and other co-investors, ResCare was established in 1989. The company has since then increased its earnings from Australian $1.4 million to Australian $2.6 million in 1991. Despite its international success, ResCare continues to improve the respirator and has come up with a lighter and smaller model that can be hand-carried.

The bionic ear

Article Abstract:

Cochlear Corp of Australia has developed and marketed a device that helps the deaf hear worldwide. The device receives sounds, translates them into codes, transmits the codes to a receiver implanted in the ear which then changes the codes into electrical signals which stimulate the nerve fibers connected to the brain. The device had a 90% share of the global market in 1991 and the business is set to grow even more. Meanwhile, Cochlear is also trying to develop a similar device to help those who no longer have hearing nerve fibers.

Start-ups, Australian style

Article Abstract:

Majority of Australian start-up firms since the 1980s have failed due to lack of development capital. Although finding capital to get started posed few problems, the serious lack of funding during the developmental stage forced many firms to close down. Two start-up firms, Cochlear Corp and Memtec Corp, provide case studies on how Australian companies can survive and remain competitive in the global marketplace.
