A drop in the bucket: economic package fails to boost Taiwan bourse

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's latest economic-stimulus package got a cool response from investors, and analysts say more fundamental changes and political predictability are needed. The ruling Kuomintang party often announces measures intended to give the economy a short-term boost before elections, and presidential polls are slated for March 23. However, concern over mainland China's threats is more to blame for last year's 27% market drop. The package announced would create a $7.28 billion stock market stabilization fund, probably too little.

Not all at once: Taipei bourse may allow in foreign retail investors

Article Abstract:

Taipei's stockmarket may open to foreign individual investors as part of a strategy for ending a bear run in time for presidential elections in March 1995. The Securities and Exchange Commission seems enthusiastic about such a move, saying it could be complete by Feb if the market does not turn bullish on its own soon. The central bank is less sanguine, predicting a transition would take at least until July. Many of the more cautious observers fear mainland China would take a more direct hand in the bourse if it opens.
