A fading hell

Article Abstract:

The role of culture in geopolitics is likely to change, according to Harvard's Samuel Huntingdon. His views on the importance of culture in international affairs have changed over time, and he has had many critics, but culture is likely to be important as the cold war ends. This means that new sources of cohesion are likely to emerge. Small groups may carry weight as well as large groups. The role of the nation state may diminish in Europe, but this does not appear to be the case in the world as a whole.

Hollywood's fading charms

Article Abstract:

Independent filmmakers have now surpassed the major studios, gaining 19 out of the 25 main Oscar nomination for 1997. Many independents are affiliated with the big studios, but they are much more creative and economical. Problems at the big studios include mega-budgets, and mega-salaries for a few stars.

The fading court

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court is not swayed by politics as much as people think. While some of the judges are politically liberal and others are politically conservative, all are judicially conservative. They dislike setting new precedents or overturning old judgements such as Roe vs Wade.
