A grubby spectacle

Article Abstract:

Russian elections of Dec 19 1999 involve 450 deputies elected to the Duma or lower house. There is a pluralist political system, despite corruption, and ideas and records in office are important. Money and guns still carry a great deal of weight, and state control of TV helps Boris Yeltsin and allies. The main parties are Our Home is Russia, and Yedinstvo, both supported by the Kremlin, and opposing parties such as Fatherland-All Russia, as well as the Communist Party, likely to be the largest in the Duma.
