The heads of a personal computer's hard disk drive largely determines the amount of data storage. Advances in hard disk technology have led to smaller dimensions of disks. Milpitas, CA-based Read-Rite Corp is the top independent head supplier in the sector and has emerged as an expert in manufacturing heads out of thin films. Even Japanese firms have not prominentlyfigured in the material-processing and miniaturization market. Developments in optical storage and flash memory, however, could significantly affect the future of the disk drive market.

The manufacture and use of digital cordless telephone technology is growing in Asia. Japanese companies are developing a personal handy phone to allow both sending and receiving calls.
