A historian's quest links J.P. Morgan to slave ownership

Article Abstract:

Research has discovered that business conducted between 1834 and 1861 by Citizens Bank of Louisiana, a predecessor of J.P. Morgan Chase and Co., links the modern day New York bank to financial dealings with slaveowners. The research was initiated as a result of a city ordnance in Chicago, Illinois, that required Bank One, a recently acquired branch of J.P. Morgan Chase, to disclose any ties it may have had to slavery before it could legally do business with the city.
