A job well done

Article Abstract:

Architectural historian William Curtis has strongly criticised the changes made by Stanton Williams to the National Theatre, London, England. However, his remarks also deserve censure due to the fallacy on which they were based. Many architects seek to protect the original architecture of the National Theatre from any criticism because they feel that the criticism is directed at Modernism in general. They fail to see that the artistic elements in the National Theatre have made it an unpleasant building to use for its intended purpose and that the artistry itself is debatable.

Redesigned office shows its metal

Article Abstract:

Architectural firm Fraser Brown MacKenna has been responsible for redesigning the Automobile Association's National Technical Centre, located on a business park outside Basingstoke, England. The design places strong emphasis on carefully blending existing and new steelwork, with relief and light interplaying to create shadow. There was a budget of only 350,000 pounds sterling, and this meant that it was necessary to reuse as much of the existing structure and foundations as possible.
