A little light

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom government proposes greater transparency in relation to campaign funding, backing many of the proposals set out in a committee on the issue in 1998. There are some differences such as a limit to the period of neutrality prior to a referendum that the government should adhere to. The Conservative Party has accepted that there is a need for reform, and the proposals are likely to become law. An independent electoral commission is to enforce the new regulations. The proposals do not mention tax relief for small political donations, a move that was recommended by the committee.

Little China

Article Abstract:

Taiwan is ruled by the Kuomintang (KMT) which retreated from mainland China to Taiwan after losing a civil war in 1949. Taiwan was ruled by Japan until after 1945 when it was returned to the KMT, which slaughtered some 28,000 Taiwanese in a revolt in Feb 1947. The KMT focused on economic development and had support from the US as a defense against communism until 1972, when there was a gradual withdrawal of support. Taiwan has become more democratic in the 1990s and is relatively lacking in corruption.

Neill and the cash machine

Article Abstract:

Lord Neill has issued a report on standards in public life in the United Kingdom, as requested by prime minister, Tony Blair. His report makes a number of recommendations such as greater transparency, and declarations when gifts of over 5,000 pounds sterling are made. A ban is proposed for blind trusts with funds from anonymous donors, and Neill also proposes allowing the same amount of funds for campaigns from both points of view if a referendum is held.
