A losing streak

Article Abstract:

The US Supreme Court has removed the presidential line-item veto which was introduced by Congress in 1996 and allowed President Clinton to remove wasteful tax breaks or spending. The Supreme Court was divided on this issue with a majority arguing that the veto was unconstitutional. Meanwhile, there is a debate on whether employees in the White House serve the public good as well as the President. Independent prosecutor, Kenneth Starr, argues that the public interest is more important. The administration argues that White House employees such as lawyers whould not be called on to testify against presidents.

A balancing act

Article Abstract:

The move in Congress toward a constitutional amendment to require a balanced budget represents nothing more than an admission of failure. Congress has made seven attempts to reduce the deficit by legislative fiat since 1978, all without effect. The US should turn its attention to genuine deficit reduction.

A sense of balance: the real reasonto be grateful that America's balanced-budget amendment was defeated

Article Abstract:

The proposed Constitutional amendment calling for a balanced budget has failed in the US Senate. The failure is noteworthy because the passage of such an amendment may have resulted in altering the balance of power in the various branches of the US government.
