Planning policy guidance: 1992 update

Article Abstract:

Planning policy guidance notes (PPGs) present government policy on planning issues. Apart from planning laws the PPGs are the most important documents on planning issues. Since 1990 several of the PPGs have been revised, including numbers 1,3,4,5 and 12, and new PPGs 7,16,17,18 and 19 have been produced. There are also new drafts of unnumbered PPGs covering planning and noise, renewable energy, nature conservation, capital planning, guidance on tourism, and planning and pollution control.

Meeting the Challenge

Article Abstract:

The UK government's 1 billion pounds sterling City Challenge scheme was launched in 1991 and is aimed at reviving deprived urban areas. All City Challenge areas must be a mixture of residential and industrial usage, have the potential to attract incoming investment and have a high level of deprivation. Among the City Challenge projects are Hulme and Barnsley in Northern England. Current progress in the two areas is assessed.

Architects should have a basic understanding of planning law and procedures as well as the theory behind it. Publications dealing with general theoretical issues as well as practical manuals are listed. However, no overall book on planning exists.
