Investors in Colombia's oil industry have to contend with guerrillas attempting to extort protection money. Aside from making investments in the communities, these oil investors are also being asked to support the activities of the guerrillas and the bank accounts of the guerrilla leaders. Leaders' regular demands often escalate, especially if exploration activities prove fruitful and the oil starts flowing. Non-payment means an attack on production facilities, while compliance with payments means more demands for money.
