Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom government has issued a report on poverty and its plans to tackle the problem. Inequality increased during the late 1980s. Later data show households with children to suffer more poverty than households with no children. This is partly because the income figures are adjusted for size of household, and children do not earn. The government is also concerned about families with no earners, and aims to encourage employment. Pensioners, those with no qualifications, and the unemployed suffer persistent poverty, so the government aims to promote studying and saving as well as employment.

Poor show: poverty

Article Abstract:

A recent study shows that the UK's poorest citizens became poorer from 1979 to 1991. Social-security secretary Peter Lilley provides a different interpretation of the statistics, but the fact remains that UK economic policy has resulted in an increase in poverty.
