A murder too far

Article Abstract:

Protests over the murder of conservative councillor Miguel Angel Blanco Garrido by the Basque separatist group ETA may have a chilling effect on the movement. The rebels had demanded the release of around 500 ETA prisoners and then killed Blanco 48 hours later when their demands were not met. The murder after such a short deadline has caused the Spanish people to question the actions of ETA, which has killed hundreds of people since it began in 1968. The government is using the group's sudden unpopularity as an opportunity to discuss Basque independence with the more moderate Basque Nationalist Party (PNV).

Not like Ireland

Article Abstract:

Herri Batasuna, the political arm of Basque separatist organization Eta, has been looking closely at how peace has been achieved in Northern Ireland. However, there are still few positive signs that peace will be secured in the Basque country, where Eta has killed six councillors since summer 1997. Indeed, it is now becoming hard for even peace-loving Basques and Spaniards to cooperate. Moderate Basques are likely to begin putting more pressure on Eta to moderate its demands.

Regionalism rampant

Article Abstract:

Spain, which has been centralized, is divided into 17 autonomous regions, the most independent-minded of which are Catalonia and the Basque country. Catalonia is prosperous and content to remain within Spain, but insists on its own language. The Basque country is troubled by terrorist violence.
