The Burmese fairy tale

Article Abstract:

Many myths have grown up around the political situation in Burma. In some cases, foreigners have shown dangerous misunderstanding of the country's situation and of the various forces at work within it. It is now time to adopt a much more realistic approach towards resolving Burma's problems, many of which are the result of years of isolation. It is vital that Burma gains jobs and is able to modernize, and this will not be achieved by encouraging foreign investors to stay away, as human rights campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi has requested.

Tourism helps the Burmese

Article Abstract:

Aung San Suu Kyi, National League for Democracy leader in Burma, claimed that tourism only benefits the privileged few, but a businessman operating in Burma believes that the tourism industry supports all types of businesses and creates employment for many Burmese locals. He believes that further investor interest in Burma would open up the monopoly-dominated business sectors and that tourism will help the country to rise up more quickly than some industries which take more time to develop.

Article Abstract:

There has been a sharp decline in the number of tourists visiting Hong Kong since the handover to China on Jul 1, 1997. This situation has been made worse by the financial crisis in Asia. The decline in tourist arrivals will have a significant impact on Hong Kong's economy, as the travel and tourism industry represents 8% of GDP and 12% of employment. Of Hong Kong's 1,260 licensed travel agents, as many as 400 may now be facing financial difficulties.
