Article Abstract:

Directors of small- and medium-sized companies in the UK often find it hard to recruit key members of staff, as potential applicants tend to focus on finding work with larger, more well-known companies. However, there are some applicants who have realised that there can be advantages associated with working for small- and medium-sized companies. When recruiting, it is important to consider the type of job which is to be filled, as this can determine the recruiting method. Above all, it is vital not to make a decision solely on the basis of the applicant's appearance.

Will small firms never learn?

Article Abstract:

Business schools in the United Kingdom do little to help small and medium-sized businesses. One reason for this is that the educational establishments are self-financing, so they have to aim their courses at the big companies with more money available for training. The Dearing Committee, which is currently looking into higher education in the UK, should consider this situation and the funding of management training. The business schools could also reconsider their aims.

Small firms start thinking big

Article Abstract:

It is vital that owner-managers of small and medium-sized businesses in the UK take the time to look critically at the company. It is important to establish a team approach with suppliers, customers, support groups and consultants, and this may require the owner-manager to view certain relationships in a different light. It may even be worth considering business training offered by a university, college or business school.
